Ukraine’s Grain Exports Surge 59% in October, Driven by Increased Shipments

Ukraine’s grain exports saw a significant increase in October, rising by 58.6% to 3.95 million metric tons compared to 2.49 million tons during the same month last year. The surge was primarily fueled by higher shipments of corn, barley, and wheat, as reported by the agriculture ministry.

Export Breakdown: The October exports included:

Wheat: 1.64 million tons
Corn: 1.92 million tons
Barley: 376,000 tons
Seasonal Performance: For the 2024/25 marketing season (July-June), total grain exports reached 14.4 million tons as of November 1, up from approximately 9.2 million tons a year earlier. This total comprised:

Wheat: 7.7 million tons
Corn: 4.7 million tons
Barley: 1.7 million tons
Export Limits: To ensure adequate domestic supplies, Ukraine’s government and agricultural associations have agreed to limit wheat exports for the 2024/25 season to 16.2 million tons. So far, traders have utilized nearly 47.8% of this quota. There are currently no restrictions on the export of other commodities.

Overall Food Exports: The Ukrainian agricultural business association, UCAB, reported that overall food product exports increased by 33.8% in October compared to September, totaling 6.6 million tons. This volume included:

Oilseeds: 1.2 million tons
Vegetable oils: 590,200 tons
Meals: 474,300 tons
Other food products: 420,400 tons
Harvest Impact: UCAB noted that the growth in exports across all categories is largely attributed to the conclusion of the harvest season.

Crop Projections: The ministry anticipates that the combined grain and oilseed crop for 2024 will fall to 77 million tons, with an estimated 54 million tons of grain.

Previous Season Comparison: In the 2023/24 marketing season, Ukraine’s grain exports reached approximately 51 million tons, up from 49.2 million tons the previous year.
