Indonesia Sets 2025 Nickel Ore Mining Quota at 200 Million Metric Tons

Indonesia has announced a nickel ore mining quota of approximately 200 million metric tons for this year, according to a senior official from the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources. This quota may be adjusted downward if mining companies fail to meet environmental and regulatory standards.

Key Highlights:
Quota Details:

The initial quota is set at 200 million tons for 2025.
Tri Winarno, Director General of Mineral and Coal, stated that the quota could be reduced based on the performance of miners, particularly regarding post-mining reclamation and environmental management.
Government’s Stance:

Minister Bahlil Lahadalia indicated that Indonesia, a leading global producer of nickel products, is reviewing its annual mining quotas to prevent further declines in nickel prices.
Last year, Indonesia’s nickel ore output reached 215 million tons.
Regulatory Measures:

In November, the government announced potential penalties for violations of environmental regulations, including the possibility of cutting mining quotas.
Previously, Indonesia approved annual nickel ore mining quotas of 240 million metric tons until 2026. However, reports from December suggested that authorities were contemplating a reduction to 150 million tons to stabilize prices.
