Trump’s Tariff Plan Includes Crude Oil, Raising Concerns in the Industry

U.S. President-elect Donald Trump is set to implement a 25% import tariff on crude oil from Canada and Mexico, according to sources familiar with the plan. This decision has sparked concerns from the oil industry about potential negative impacts on consumers, industry stability, and national security.

Key Highlights:
Impact on Oil Imports: Canada and Mexico are the largest sources of U.S. crude oil imports, supplying approximately 25% of the crude processed by U.S. refiners. The imposition of tariffs could disrupt this vital supply chain.

Industry Response: Major oil trade groups, including the American Fuel and Petrochemical Manufacturers (AFPM) and the American Petroleum Institute (API), have expressed strong opposition to the tariffs. They argue that such measures could inflate import costs, reduce oil supply, and provoke retaliatory tariffs, ultimately harming consumers.

Concerns Over Prices: Analysts warn that the tariffs may lead to increased oil prices for U.S. refiners, squeezing profit margins and driving up fuel costs. The U.S. imported about 5.2 million barrels per day from Canada and Mexico in 2024, with over 4 million barrels coming from Canada.

Regional Implications: The Midwest, heavily reliant on Canadian crude, could face higher gasoline prices if tariffs are imposed. Rohit Rathod, an analyst at Vortexa, noted the difficulty in replacing this crucial supply.

Refinery Compatibility Issues: While the U.S. is the world’s top oil producer, much of its output is light crude, which is less compatible with domestic refineries designed for heavier crude types from Canada and Mexico. Transitioning to process lighter crudes would require significant investment in new equipment.

Trump’s Economic Goals: The Trump transition team maintains that tariffs on imports, including those from China, have created jobs and spurred investment without causing inflation. Karoline Leavitt, a spokeswoman, emphasized the administration’s commitment to prioritizing American workers and revitalizing the economy.
