Morocco to Import More Wheat from Russia Than France in 2024/25

In the 2024/25 season, Morocco is set to import more soft wheat from Russia than from France, according to Omar Yacoubi, head of the Moroccan grain traders’ association (FNCL). Morocco requires approximately 5 million metric tons of soft wheat due to a poor domestic harvest caused by drought.

Yacoubi noted that France’s declining wheat harvest means it cannot meet Morocco’s needs, leading the country to seek alternatives. Since August, Black Sea origin wheat has emerged as the most competitive option in the market. With expected reductions in French wheat exports to Morocco—projected to fall from 2.8 million tons to 1.5 million tons—Russia is positioned to become the primary supplier.

Moroccan traders are also considering imports from Argentina and Brazil. From June to August, Morocco imported about 1.5 million tons of wheat, with France initially in the lead, followed by Russia, Poland, Germany, and Ukraine. The stability of prices up to September has encouraged increased imports, with traders aiming to continue until March, as current stockpiles cover just over three months of consumption.
