Record Iowa Corn Yield Prospects Amid Subpar Minnesota Crop

The Pro Farmer Crop Tour has reported record-high corn yield potential in Iowa, projecting a yield of 192.79 bushels per acre (bpa), significantly surpassing last year’s average of 182.80 bpa and the three-year average of 185.79 bpa. This positive outlook comes as Iowa benefits from near-ideal growing conditions.

Conversely, Minnesota’s corn yield is projected at 164.90 bpa, marking a decline from last year’s estimate of 181.34 bpa and the three-year average of 183.06 bpa. Excessive rainfall in June has hampered growth in Minnesota, with concerns that washed-away fertilizer may hinder the crop’s completion.

Overall, the tour found above-average corn yields in six of the seven Corn Belt states surveyed, indicating a favorable season for many farmers. However, the current grain and oilseed futures prices are nearing four-year lows due to ample global supplies.

In terms of soybeans, while specific yield projections were not made, the number of soybean pods per square in Minnesota averaged 1,036.59, slightly above last year’s average, suggesting a healthier crop compared to corn. Iowa also reported a rise in soybean pod counts, reinforcing its position as a leading soybean producer.

The tour, which included scouting in South Dakota, Nebraska, Illinois, Indiana, and Ohio, is set to release further estimates on U.S. corn and soybean production.
