According to Egypt’s supply minister Sherif Farouk, the country’s strategic reserves of wheat are sufficient for 6.9 months. This statement was made to the state news agency on Thursday.
The minister also provided information on Egypt’s strategic reserves of other essential commodities:
Sugar reserves are sufficient for 19.3 months
Vegetable oil reserves are sufficient for 5.6 months
This data demonstrates that Egypt has a relatively strong position in terms of food security, with substantial strategic reserves of key staple foods like wheat, sugar, and vegetable oils.
The availability of these strategic reserves is crucial for a country like Egypt, which relies heavily on imports to meet its domestic food demand. Having several months’ worth of reserves provides a buffer against potential supply chain disruptions or fluctuations in global commodity prices.
The announcement by the supply minister is likely aimed at reassuring the public and reinforcing the government’s commitment to ensuring food security in the country. It also highlights Egypt’s efforts to build up its strategic reserves as a strategic priority.
