The General Food Security Authority (GFSA) of Saudi Arabia has issued a tender to purchase 595,000 metric tons of wheat for arrival between September and December this year.
The tender was announced by the GFSA in a statement released on Thursday. The purchase is part of Saudi Arabia’s efforts to ensure food security and maintain adequate strategic wheat reserves in the country.
Saudi Arabia is one of the world’s largest wheat importers, relying heavily on overseas supplies to meet the domestic demand. The kingdom typically issues tenders several times a year to purchase wheat from international markets.
The latest tender seeks 595,000 tons of wheat, which will be delivered in multiple shipments during the September-December period. The GFSA did not provide further details on the specific wheat quality or origin requirements.
This procurement is in line with Saudi Arabia’s ongoing strategy to bolster its food security amid global market uncertainties and supply chain disruptions. The kingdom has been actively working to diversify its wheat sources and strengthen its domestic agricultural production capacity.
The tender announcement comes as global wheat prices have seen volatility in recent months, driven by factors such as the Russia-Ukraine conflict, adverse weather conditions, and export restrictions in some major producing countries.
