According to data from the World Steel Association, global crude steel production in May rose 1.5% from a year earlier to 165.1 million tonnes.
The key highlights are:
China, the world’s top producer and consumer of steel, saw its crude steel output increase by 2.7% to 92.9 million tonnes in May.
In contrast, Japan’s crude steel output fell 6.3% in May from a year earlier, reaching 7.17 million tonnes, as per data from the Japan Iron and Steel Federation.
The overall 1.5% year-on-year increase in global steel output reflects the continued demand for the metal, despite economic headwinds in some regions.
The data underscores the diverging trends among major steel producing countries, with China’s output expanding while Japan’s contracted. This highlights the varied dynamics at play in the global steel industry.
