Egypt Aims to Boost Wheat Planting by 9% for 2024/2025 Fiscal Year

According to Egypt’s Planning Minister, the country is targeting a wheat planting area of 3.5 million feddans (1.47 million hectares) for the 2024/2025 fiscal year, up from 3.2 million feddans in the current 2023/2024 fiscal year. This represents a 9% increase in the planned wheat cultivation area.

The increased wheat planting is part of Egypt’s efforts to expand its strategic crops production and reduce imports. Reaching the 3.5 million feddan target would also expand the country’s wheat storage capacity to 5.2 million tonnes, up from approximately 3.9 million tonnes in the 2022-2023 fiscal year.

In addition to the wheat expansion, Egypt’s plans for strategic crops in the next fiscal year include 2.8 million feddans of corn and 220,000 feddans of fava beans.

Overall, Egypt aims to increase its total agricultural area by 750,000 feddans, bringing the total to 10.7 million feddans, in a bid to reduce its reliance on imports and boost domestic food production.

These measures are part of Egypt’s broader strategy to strengthen its food security and agricultural self-sufficiency, especially in the wake of global supply chain disruptions and commodity price volatility.
