Bashneft, Russian Oil Company, Installs Anti-Drone Nets to Safeguard Refineries Amid Potential Threats

In response to potential threats from Ukrainian attacks, Russian oil producer Bashneft has taken proactive measures by installing anti-drone nets to safeguard critical facilities at its refineries. The head of the republic of Bashkortostan, where the company is located, confirmed this development on Friday.

Commercial and public entities in Russia that offer such nets showcase large meshed metal structures on their websites, designed to cover refinery buildings from all angles and supported by mooring lines attached to metal stakes in the ground.

Ukraine’s increased targeting of Russian oil refineries, as part of its efforts to reduce Moscow’s energy revenues and military expenditure, has prompted these defensive actions. Despite the attacks, Russia has not experienced fuel shortages, although it recently imposed restrictions on some gasoline exports for six months to safeguard its domestic fuel market.

Radiy Khabirov, the head of Bashkortostan, revealed ongoing discussions with Russia’s defense ministry to enhance refinery security. He emphasized the installation of mechanical protection nets for the main columns of the refineries, along with an operational surveillance system. Additionally, undisclosed classified measures are being considered to address the evolving situation.

Bashneft, which is under the control of Rosneft, Russia’s largest oil producer, operates multiple refineries in the region, playing a crucial role in the country’s energy sector. Russia has condemned the drone attacks as acts of terrorism.
