Engie Expands Biogas Portfolio in the Netherlands, Aims for Renewable Gas Growth

French energy company Engie has expanded its biogas portfolio by acquiring two biomethane production sites in the Netherlands, with plans to increase their capacity as part of its broader goal to produce 10 terawatt hours (TWh) of biogas and sell 30 TWh annually in Europe by 2030. The latest acquisitions have bolstered Engie’s total installed biogas production capacity in Europe to 1.1 TWh, representing a significant step in the company’s renewable energy strategy.

The two Dutch sites, located in Hardenburg and Alkmaar, currently produce 0.09 TWh and 0.05 TWh annually, respectively, with potential for expansion to 0.15 TWh and 0.094 TWh. Engie’s strategic acquisitions align with its commitment to renewable energy and its ambition to position itself as a key player in the renewable gas sector, leveraging the benefits of biomethane’s chemical similarity to natural gas and its renewable energy classification under EU regulations.

Biomethane’s versatility, including its ability to be injected into existing pipeline grids, and its renewable energy designation make it an attractive option for countries and companies seeking to meet green energy quotas, particularly in the transport sector. Engie’s long-term plans include integrating the acquired biogas volumes into its sales portfolio to strengthen its integrated gas business, reflecting its commitment to sustainable energy solutions.

The expansion of Engie’s biogas portfolio in the Netherlands underscores the company’s strategic focus on renewable energy growth and its pursuit of opportunities in the evolving renewable gas sector.
