Brazil’s Coffee Exports Surge by 37.8% in March, Achieving Quarterly Record

Brazil’s coffee exports in March soared to a total of 4.29 million 60-kg bags, marking a remarkable 37.8% increase compared to the corresponding period last year, as reported by industry group Cecafe on Tuesday. This figure sets a new record for the month, reflecting the country’s status as the world’s largest coffee producer and exporter.

Cecafe further highlighted that coffee shipments from Brazil reached an all-time high in the first quarter of the year. The notable surge in exports was largely attributed to robusta coffee, which achieved a record export volume in March at 846,700 bags – nearly eight times the amount shipped during the same period in 2023.

The increased export of robusta coffee from Brazil is filling gaps left by reduced exports from Vietnam and Indonesia, key producers of this coffee variety. Marcio Ferreira, President of Cecafe, noted that Brazil successfully met international demand, overcoming challenges arising from adverse weather conditions in Indonesia and Vietnam.

Moreover, shipments of arabica coffee, which constitute the majority of Brazil’s coffee exports, also experienced significant growth, rising by 15.1% year-on-year in March to 3.1 million bags. The total revenue generated from Brazilian coffee exports surged by 35.2% during the same period, reaching $913.6 million.

Ferreira shared insights from the National Coffee Association’s (NCA) annual convention in the United States, indicating that the production decline in Vietnam was not as substantial as initially anticipated.
