Ukraine witnessed a substantial export of 339,000 metric tons of barley in March, marking one of the largest monthly volumes this season, as reported by a Ukrainian agricultural producer group. With a strong tradition in barley cultivation and export, Ukraine has shipped nearly 2 million tons from July 2023 to April 2024.
The Agrarian Council anticipates consistent exports in the upcoming months, projecting around 200,000 tons in both April and May. Ukrainian barley has gained competitiveness in the market and is experiencing demand from European Union countries and Turkey, contributing to its robust export performance.
The primary barley trade activities have been concentrated in Odesa Black Sea ports, where the indicative price stands at approximately $145 per ton. The council foresees a potential increase in prices by $1 to $2 per ton within the current week.
As of March 29, Ukrainian farmers have commenced sowing barley for the 2024 season, covering 291,400 hectares. The agriculture ministry has projected a rise in the area sown to spring barley this year, estimating an increase to 943,000 hectares compared to 821,900 hectares in 2023. This expansion signals a positive outlook for Ukraine’s barley production and export potential in the current agricultural season.
