China Bans Imports of Sheep and Goats from Greece and Romania

China has implemented a ban on imports of sheep, goats, and related products from Greece and Romania to prevent the spread of a disease outbreak. The decision was announced by the customs authority on Wednesday, following the detection of Goat plague, or Peste des Petits Ruminants (PPR), in Greece last month. This highly contagious virus primarily affects goats and sheep and can result in mortality rates of up to 70% among infected animals, although it does not affect humans.

The ban on imports from Greece took effect on July 26, while the restrictions on Romanian imports were enforced starting August 2. These measures are part of China’s efforts to safeguard its livestock industry from potential disease outbreaks.
